The darkest day in my island

On December 26, 2004, a big tsunami hit Sri Lanka because of an undersea earthquake near Sumatra. The waves hit the eastern and southern coasts, causing a lot of damage. Thousands of people died, and many villages were destroyed.

The areas most affected were Galle, Matara, and Batticaloa, where many people lived close to the sea. More than 30,000 people died, and many lost their homes. The disaster also hurt important buildings like roads and hospitals.

Rescue efforts started quickly with help from local and international groups. Aid came to Sri Lanka, and the country began to rebuild. Even though the damage was serious, the people of Sri Lanka worked hard to recover and rebuild their communities.
